A Very True Story

The Dave Slice

This is a story about a black man named Dave. He was a sort of butler for my Great Uncle Cliff. They lived in a little cabin at a camp on the banks of Black creek.

One day a sweet lady brought my uncle a pie, I think it was a pecan pie. My uncle Cliff didn’t like to eat sweets that much, only every once in a while, so that day he and Dave had a piece.

About week later, I think it was, Uncle Cliff had five or six friends over for a party. After every one had finished the meal, Uncle Cliff said, “Hey Dave why don’t ya go in there and cut us all a piece‘a’ that pie.” And Dave said, “Ahhh rrrr, Ye’sir, aahhh, err.” And went to cut everyone a piece of pie. Well Dave got to the kitchen and took out that pie and he looked at it not exactly sure what to do. See there was only one piece left, ‘cause every day he’d been gettin’ himself a piece. (Uncle Cliff didn’t know that ‘cause he only felt like somethin’ sweet occasionally). But Dave took that piece of pie and cut into six or seven pieces, so thin that you could see through it. I feel sorry for Dave though ‘cause Pecan pie is some of the hardest stuff to cut evenly, especially if the nuts aren’t chopped. But can you imagine the looks on the other guys’ faces when Dave handed out the plates with the thinnest slice of pie ya ever saw! This is what we call “The Dave Slice”.

Well you can believe that this story was spoken of at most of the family gatherings afterward, when folks were too full for much desert.

Our Snow Day

Today we had a snow day in South Mississippi, which is very rare for us. This morning I woke up at seven and sat up imedentally thinking of snow, there was none. needles to say I was very dissapointed. (We were thinking it would have all ready fallen.) But about an hour later (I had fallen back to sleep) Mama and Daddy woke us up saying it was snowing! We waited a while to go out in it, because we wanted to see if it stuck. (It did!!!)

Saturday Creations

This Saturday was quite enjoyable. After our typically late Saturday lunch Anna and I pulled out our ingredients and set to making Chocolate-Peanutbutter Whoopie Pies, while watching "Daniel Boone." : ) They turned out very well and they were enjoyed by everyone at church and at our Super Bowl party. You can find the recipe here.

And that evening I finished the shawl I started several weeks before. It turned out lovely and I am delighted with it.
Over a year ago I bought yarn wanting to make a cape, intending to make up the pattern as I went. That didn't turn out to well so Mama bought me a poncho pattern. I tried to do that but I couldn't figure it. So, about the middle of January I was feeling old-fashioned and wanted to make a warm triangle shawl. So Mama and I got on the internet and searched for a pattern. After looking through several we found one that called for the exact yarn and number of skeins I had bought earlier. It was simple and what I wanted, and I really enjoyed making it. You can find the pattern here.
In this picture I took the sides of the shawl crossed it in the front and tied it in the back.
